The De Poort Heritage Village is an interactive, authentic open-air heritage village recreating the artisan crafts and lifestyles in Drakenstein during the boom period (1875-1895).

Visitors to Paarl can join in the historical life of the village through interaction with crafters and artisans; through events and on-site experiences exploiting the five senses.

 

The valuable cart and wagon collection with machinery and tools of the Transport industry before the combustion engine forms part of the historical village heritage and is displayed as if in a “showroom” and workshop of yesteryear.

The name “De Poort” captures the historical role played by the Drakenstein Valley incorporating Paarl and Wellington as the Gateway linking North and South transport routes (the Forgotten Highway) - especially those which led to the development of the diamond and goldfields up north. The area was also known previously as “The Gate” or “Gateway”. The project is situated in Southern Paarl just off the N1, and close to the historic Paarl railway station.
