Avondale Wines
Avondale WinesWines Approved By Mother Nature. No one makes wine like we do. At Avondale we're getting back to nature - but we are using 21st century science, technology and research in the process. It started a few years ago when we made a simple choice: because wine is a natural (and delicious) product, producing it shouldn't harm the environment in any way.

Since then, we've been uncompromising. And we've trusted the wisdom of nature to guide us. We use cover crops instead of fertilizer to restore the balance of the soil. We never use artificial sprays to control pests - ducks and wasps do that job for us.

Avondale wines have less than half the norm of CO² or sulfate levels. This is the way we prefer to make our wines, and it is possible by cellaring our balanced grapes, and fermenting only healthy grapes in a clean cellar.

Since 2001, Avondale has garnered heaps of prestigious awards and medals. However, since 2004, we have not entered any South African or International competitions. As we strive to make elegant and refined wines, these are mostly not suitable as show wines.

Here co-owner and winemaker Gesie van Deventer seeks to practice a vintner's fine craftsmanship that is based on the cultivated harmony between man and nature. Gesie, an erstwhile barrister, is also a qualified oenologist.

To make good wine was her life-long passion and dreams, so eventually she threw caution to the wind and changed her advocate's robe and designer-shoes for an oenologists's overalls and gumboots to produce award-winning wines.

On this Boutique Cellar personal attention is given to each bottle. Gesie is supported by her businessman husband and co-owner, Johan van Deventer.
